A completely bespoke approach to frame making

My approach to frame making stems from my experience as a photography graduate, having to simultaneously learn all the considerations needed to order frames, while also becoming increasingly frustrated with the inflexibility of so many of these choice. Framing ones work should be a stage in which the physicality of a piece is realised according to the artists vision, and being beholden to the materials, colours, finishes and dimensions of pre-made battens is anything but conducive to this process.

It all starts with a tree

By starting from rough lumber, a new world of creative control and possibilities are opened. Many processes involved in taking a living tree and transforming it into a finished piece may be harnessed to enhance each aspect; the way the wood is cut, dried, milled, machined, joined and finished. Subtle details that cumulatively lead to the perfect accompaniment to your work.

 Open communication; considered results

As an artist myself, I have experienced the frustrations of trying to communicate loose concepts and ideas to individuals who seem to only speak in technical jargon and dimensions. What I try to offer is an open environment to help with the communication of new and exciting ideas, while bringing a considered viewpoint that bridges the conceptual and practical realm to the table. Translating your ideas into practical ideas in a thoughtful and effective way leads to the most exciting commissions.

By working with finely tuned, precision machinery and hand tools each stage of production may be carefully controlled to tolerances of ~0.1mm. These tolerances allow for perfect joinery, presentation, and easier installation, particularly when working with multiple framed pieces.

All of our frames are reinforced using hardwood splines manufactured in house and fitted to 0.02mm tolerance, meaning the frames are superbly strong and seamless in construction. Splines may be made of the same species of wood as the frame, making them almost invisible, or they may be made from a contrasting wood to show off the frames joinery.
